Blog 3-My First community outreach event
My first community outreach event with the browns organization was great. For this event, the Browns organization hosted a kid’s football fun day for students at Maple Heights middle school. The purpose of this event was to emphasize the importance of staying in school, and committing to education from a young age. Around 30 students with the highest school attendance and performance were chosen for this event by the principal to participate in this event. The principal emphasized to the volunteers and members of the Browns organization the importance of rewarding accomplishments in school in order to motivate children to continue their academic excellence. At this event, Cleveland Browns Linebacker #5 Anthony Walker made an appearance, and had fun with the kids. Before the event, he discussed what school meant to him. While football was important to him, he felt that school was just as, if not more important for him, because it allowed him to explore his curiosity, learn discipline, and grow as an individual. This eventually allowed him to attend and graduate from Northwestern University. After these speeches from Walker and the Principal, the activities began. There were five football based activities including, an obstacle course, throwing challenge, football tic tac toe, flag pulling, and deal or no deal with prizes. I was helping with the throwing competition. I was holding up the giant ring (seen in images), and helping the kids throw the football through. I was able to have a lot of fun with the kids, other volunteers, teachers, the browns mascot Chomps, and Anthony Walker. The kids had a lot of fun throwing the football making the event a success. I had a lot of fun at my first community outreach event. It was fun and rewarding to volunteer at this event with these children, especially since the message being sent to these kids is so important. As I continue to learn about how the Browns organization operates in the offseason, I look forward to more of these events.
Very cool to see the "behind the scenes" activities that the Browns organization finds worthwhile. Too often, in the talk show world we live in, we focus on the negatives, or the wins and losses. Knowing the importance that an organization like the Browns places on the community partnership, is really why these teams are vital to the cities where they call home.
