Blog 4-Progress on my side project
This internship with the Cleveland Browns involves two parts for me. These include working on events, and an individual project about youth football in other organizations. Last week, I started my research project that will span the entire internship. For this project, I first had to learn about the programs within the Browns organization. These programs fall into categories that include, player development, non-traditional growth and inclusion, youth/High school football, coach support, player support, officials support, and players as ambassadors. Big programs the browns have that caught my eye are rookie tackle (transition from flag to tackle football), high school girls flag football (Hawken has had this for the last two years), adaptive football league (flag football league for kids and adults with disabilities), parents clinic (helping parents understand more about youth football, and impacts on children), coach of the week (10 high school coaches honored throughout the season and given money for their programs), and the different player’s work in the community (many players volunteer and have foundations). After learning about these programs within the Browns organization, I was tasked with researching similar programs within the 31 other NFL organizations to see how the Browns stack up around the league. Over the past few years, I was told that the browns have ranked in the top 5 for community programs around the league, so it was interesting to see what other teams did in the community. While at first glance this task seemed simple, this research is much different than I would have anticipated. Unlike the Browns, many teams do not have a youth football or community outreach page, which means that researching programs within the various categories listed above, is difficult. This has caused me to look at various team sites, and compile information that way. Another problem that I have had is that some teams do not have too many programs in various categories, which leads me to question whether these programs do not exist, or if I am not looking deep enough. So far, this project has taught me a lot about what NFL organizations do behind the scenes in the community, and I look forward to continued work on this project. It is interesting to see the similarities and differences within the different NFL organizations approach to youth football, and the community. I have completed research for 17 organizations at the time I am writing this post. I will continue this project throughout the internship.
Rohan, this is super interesting to me and I am impressed that you are taking on this "extra" part of your project. You mentioned the Girls Flag program at Hawken, but we were also in on the ground floor with the Rookie Tackle program. When the current Juniors were in 6th grade, we started a team in the Rookie tackle program(although we had to do it under the Mentor community name that first year). I was one of the coaches and thought it was a great transition for our kids. They have continued it each year since then, so now 6 seasons of our kids playing Rookie Tackle in 5th and 6th grade. Mr. Marmaros, who recently left our middle school AD job, expanded the program to include many of the CVC league teams.
